The legendary Rogério never lost a game in which he scored

Rogério Ceni was born on January 22, 1973, in Pato Branco, a small town in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil. His sporting career, however, started with Sinop FC in the state of Mato Grosso (central-western Brazil), with whom he won the "Campeonato Matogrossense" in 1990. On September 7, 1990, he joined São Paulo Futebol Clube, with whose youth team he won the "Campeonato Paulista" the same year. In São Paulo, Rogério developed under the guidance of famous coach Telê Santana da Silva – and in the shade of national goalkeeper Armelino Donizetti Quagliato "Zetti". Playing in the category "aspirante", Rogério won the "Copa São Paulo júnior" in 1993, and was on the bench of the league team in the same year, when São Paulo FC won the “Copa Libertadores“, the "CONMEBOL Recopa" and the "Copa Intercontinental". The following year he still was on the bench, when São Paulo FC won the "Recopa" again.

When São Paulo FC, fielding a team weakened by substitutions, won the "Copa CONMEBOL" in 1994, Rogério did get to play as fiels player. In the semi-final against SC Corínthians Paulista (São Paulo), he converted his shot during the penalty shoot-out. It was only in 1997, when goalkeeper “Zetti” transferred to Santos, that Rogério succeeded him. By then, he was being trained by Muricy Ramalho, who had previously assisted "Master Telê". This coach now let Rogério also take free kicks during matches, after he had practices these more than 15,000 times. Rogério scored his first goal off a free kick in São Paulo on February 15, 1997, during a league match for the “Campeonato Paulista“ against União São João. On September 13, 1997, he scored his first goal off a free kick during the Brazilian championship, against Botafogo FR (Rio de Janeiro).

Rogério scored his first international goal, also off a free kick, on August 25, 1999, during the "Copa Mercosur", against Gustavo Campagnuolo of CA San Lorenzo de Almagro (Buenos Aires). The Argentine also was the first goalkeeper to concede three goals to Rogério, all of them free kicks. Rogério had previously been nominated for the Brazilian national team, with whom he won the "Confederations Cup" in 1997. He also won the "Campeonato Paulista" with his club in 1998 and 2000, as well as the "Torneio Rio-São Paulo" in 2001.

It was amazing that until May 2004, Rogério scored 26 of his first 29 goals in official matches off a free kick. His first “Copa Libertadores“ goal, in Lima (Peru) against Club Alianza Lima on February 11, 2004, also was scored off a free kick. Until August 2006, he scored 10 goals during this most important South American club competition. This is a record for a South American goalkeeper, and while playing for his club at this competition, he matched the high mark shared by Pedro Rocha, Luís Antônio Corrêa da Costa "Müller" and Palhinha.

In 2005 Rogério captained São Paulo FC to victory during the São Paulo state championship, the Copa Libertadores and the Club World Championship. In 2005 he was voted the best player of the "Copa Libertaodres", and in December 2005 also the first goalkeeper to score a goal during a FIFA championship: a penalty against Asian champion al-Ittihad (Jeddah, Saudi Arabia). Until August 21, 2006, Rogério played for Brazil 17 times, but only national coach Leão let him take a few free kicks – which, however, did not lead to a goal. He attended the World Cup final rounds with Brazil in 2002 (without appearances) and 2006.

Already on July 27, 2005, with his 618th match, Rogério set the record for his beloved São Paulo FC, which he never left. No other player played as many matches for this club during the 20th century as did Rogério. In 2000, 2003 and 2004 he won the silver ball, which is traditionally awarded to the best goalkeeper of the Brazilian championship. Since 2005, Rogério regularly takes penalties for São Paulo FC, and so far he failed to convert only eight of 33. He has since been one of Brazil‘s most important scorers, having scored the decisive goal at a critical moment during several competitions.

On August 20, 2006, during a Brazilian championship league match at the Estádio Mineiro in Belo Horizonte, Rogério broke the world record set by José Luis Félix Chilavert of Paraguay when he converted a free kick against hosts Cruzeiro FC in the 43rd minute. Four minutes earlier, he had reacted unbelievably fast when he held a penalty by Wagner, thus preventing his team from being down 0:3. In the 63rd minute, Rogério broke his own record when he converted a penalty (final score 2:2).

It is a sensation that Rogério scored 44 of his 69 off a free kick, but what borders on fantasy that São Paulo FC never lost a match if Rogério scored. IFFHS has honoured Rogério Ceni – as Chilavert before him – as a world record holder in December 2006. Few days later he became with his club Brazilian champion. At the voting of "The World's best Goalkeeper 2006" he took the 6th place.
