Intervista al primo Imam dichiaratamente gay

Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed è il primo Imam ad essersi dichiarato omosessuale. Da alcuni anni si batte affinché l’Islam riconosca la comunità Lgbt. Non a caso nel 2012 ha fondato la più antica moschea inclusiva d’Europa, nella città di Parigi, ed è attualmente impegnato all’Istituto CALEM , dove accoglie omosessuali e transessuali musulmani che sono stati cacciati dalle loro famiglie. Ha celebrato diversi matrimoni tra coppie gay ed è stato sposato con un uomo per alcuni anni. Lo abbiamo intervistato per TPI.

Ci racconta la sua storia?

Il mio nome è Ludovic-Mohamed Zahed. Sono nato in Algeria nel 1977. Intorno ai 17 anni mi sono reso conto che ciò che provavo verso altri uomini era chiamato “omosessualità”. Compresi che nella mia cultura questo “stato” era condannato e gran parte della mia famiglia era di religione islamica.

Dopo circa sette anni, smisi di considerarmi un musulmano e mi avvicinai alla spiritualità grazie alla meditazione, al buddismo, al cristianesimo. Poi, qualche tempo dopo, sono finalmente ritornato all’Islam, perché ho capito che c’è bellezza in tutte le culture. Grazie a Dio, sono stato capace di trovare di nuovo la pace non dovendo scegliere tra una parte di me e l’altra, dividermi tra l’omosessualità e la spiritualità.

Ed ora?

Adesso vivo a Marsiglia, dove ho un istituto – “Calem Institute” – in cui tutti sono i benvenuti. Offriamo formazione e sostegno a coloro che fuggono dalla guerra civile o che vengono cacciati dalle proprie famiglie perché di diversa identità sessuale.

Questo è ciò che faccio ora: insegno, trasmetto e cerco di aiutare quanto posso le persone omosessuali a sentirsi accettate e a fare dell’Islam una religione basata sull’emancipazione e non più sull’oppressione e sul fascismo.

Eppure, l’idea che molti hanno dell’Islam è quella di una religione violenta…

L’Islam non esiste da sé, non puoi chiamarlo o mandargli una email. Non risponderebbe. L’Islam non è vivo, noi invece lo siamo. Purtroppo i terroristi dichiarano di essere gli unici veri islamici e i musulmani progressisti sono accusati di infangare la reale identità di questa religione.

L’Islam deve essere una filosofia umanistica universale della vita, deve basarsi su consigli e valori etici e non essere una legge che ci dice cos’è proibito e cosa concesso. È importante educare la nostra gente anche oltre oceano, per fare in modo che si lascino andare, che capiscano che la religione musulmana vuole che siano liberi, in pace con se stessi.

Avrebbe potuto fare quello che fa oggi restando in Algeria?

Assolutamente no, perché lì è ancora un crimine essere omosessuale, promuovere l’omosessualità e parlare dei diritti LGBT come faccio io. Mi sarebbe potuto costare fino a dieci anni di prigione: non soltanto tre per essermi dichiarato gay, ma dieci per averlo promosso.

Sfortunatamente in questo paese si sta sfruttando una sfaccettatura fascista dell’Islam per controllare la popolazione e tenerla lontana dalla democrazia. Lo stesso discorso vale per l’Egitto e l’Arabia Saudita. Ma è un sistema che sta morendo. È morto in Europa, grazie a Dio, e sta pian piano terminando nelle altre parti del mondo.

In Italia le politiche anti-immigrazione hanno portato la destra, da Salvini a Meloni, ad ottenere ampio consenso. Da franco-algerino-musulmano che vive in Francia, qual è il suo parere?

Il razzismo nasce in una società quando si ha paura per la propria sopravvivenza e per quella dei propri figli. In psicologia sociale questo meccanismo è definito “istinto animale” e non ha nulla a che fare con la cultura o con Dio.

Abbiamo visto, grazie a due guerre mondiali, cosa può succedere assecondando questi istinti brutali. Spero che, in Europa come dall’altra parte del mondo, si abbia la forza e l’illuminazione accademica per evitare un altro conflitto globale e la distruzione dell’ambiente – che ci costringerebbe a vivere in porzioni di Terra sempre più piccole – accettando l’idea di essere tutti uguali e di avere, indistintamente, il diritto alla sopravvivenza e alla vita.

Nessuno vuole lasciare il Paese in cui è cresciuto di punto in bianco. La mia famiglia ha lasciato l’Algeria perché c’era una guerra civile, perché le persone morivano ogni giorno per le strade e avevamo le bombe lungo il percorso per tornare a casa. Lasciamo le nostre terre perché come tutti vogliamo sopravvivere.

Credo di potermi definire con modestia un esempio di ciò che un immigrato può diventare grazie alla libertà, all’emancipazione economica e alla formazione che abbiamo qui in Europa. Dobbiamo incoraggiare le persone a liberarsi nei propri Paesi ma nel caso fossero impossibilitati devono venire qui e trovare una stabilità. Dobbiamo accoglierli con dignità, umanità amore e protezione.

Lettera alle ragazze che vogliono unirsi all'Isis
Un'attivista musulmana ha scritto una lettera alle ragazze che pensano di lasciare il loro Paese per unirsi all'Isis




Sara Khan è un'attivista per i diritti umani musulmana e direttrice di Inspire, un'organizzazione con l'obiettivo di aumentare la consapevolezza dei diritti umani e delle tutele offerte alle donne musulmane.

Sara ha scritto una lettera alle ragazze che pensano di lasciare i loro Paesi per unirsi all'Isis, dopo che tre adolescenti sono partite da Londra per raggiungere gli estremisti.

L'attivista esorta le giovani ragazze musulmane a ignorare la propaganda diffusa dall'Isis e dei suoi sostenitori, che raggiungono le donne attraverso forum online e social media. Finora si ritiene che almeno 60 donne abbiano lasciato il Regno Unito per unirsi Isis, molte delle quali adolescenti.

La lettera è stata pubblicata sul sito di Inspire. Nella lettera, Khan spiega alle ragazze che l'Islam non prevede in realtà un obbligo religioso di fare hijra, cioé di emigrare per fare la guerra.

Khan racconta i secoli in cui cristiani e musulmani convivevano pacificamente, periodi che sono in netto contrasto con la persecuzione che l'Isis ha inflitto alle minoranze religiose che vivono in zone che si trovano sotto il suo auto-dichiarato califfato.



Ecco un estratto della lettera:

Cara sorella,

non mi conosci, ma come te sono inglese e musulmana. Alcuni dei tuoi amici potrebbero essere partiti per unirsi all'Isis e anche tu forse stai valutando di farlo.I social media sono pieni di racconti su come la vita sia meravigliosa con l'Isis; sul fatto che sarai promessa in sposa a un marito e avrai la possibilità di adempiere al tuo obbligo religioso di fare "hijra".Potresti avere perfino letto storie di donne che raccontano di aver ricevuto un alloggio gratis, assistenza e la vicinanza di donne di tutto il mondo, e che l'Isis offre sicurezza.

Scrivo questa lettera solo per dirti che ti hanno mentito nel più crudele dei modi. Solo perché chi ti mente veste abiti religiosi, usa un linguaggio religioso, e pretende di parlare in nome di Dio, ciò non cambia il semplice fatto che ti menta attraverso una clamorosa manipolazione degli insegnamenti della nostra fede.

Ti stanno mentendo prima di tutto sul tuo dovere religioso come musulmana, ma anche sulla realtà della vita sotto Isis. E il pensiero che tu distrugga la tua vita per un sacco di bugie è ciò che mi spinge a scrivere questa lettera. Perché meriti di conoscere la verità e di vivere una vita piena e felice.

Non c'è alcun obbligo religioso per fare hijra o giurare fedeltà a questo leader auto-dichiarato, che sostiene di essere il califfo. Per secoli i musulmani hanno vissuto in terre che non erano sotto il dominio musulmano.

Anche durante la vita del Profeta, egli non chiese a quei primi musulmani che inizialmente avevano fatto "hijra" in Abissinia di fare hijra a Medina, quando Medina era governata dal Profeta.

L'Isis ritiene che le ragazze dovrebbero essere date in moglie a partire dall'età di 9 anni e che le donne dovrebbero restare "nascoste e velate dalla società" -- ma questo è in netto contrasto con la storia islamica. L'Islam ha prodotto alcune delle donne più belle, che erano tutt'altro che nascoste lontano dalla società.

L'Isis afferma di sostenere la liberazione delle donne, ma non lasciarti ingannare -- questa non è una liberazione. Si tratta di sottomissione e abuso dell'indipendenza e autorevolezza delle donne, che Dio ha conferito loro per servire l'umanità.

La libertà è un nucleo essenziale dell'Islam; l'Isis sembra sempre e solo negarlo. Il rispetto della vita è un insegnamento sacrosanto del Corano, ma l'Isis sembra solo sminuirlo esso.

La pace è ciò che il Corano chiede ancora e ancora; tuttavia l'Isis cerca sempre e solo guerra, e spargimento di sangue.

Cara sorella, non distruggere la tua vita e quella della tua famiglia prendendo per buona una bugia. Troverai molte altre tue sorelle musulmane che hanno rifiutato la chiamata dell'Isis poiché hanno riconosciuto l'ideologia velenosa che porta avanti.

Dear Sister,

You won’t know me but like you I too am British and Muslim. Some of your friends may have gone out to join ISIS and you are also considering going out too. Social media is awash with accounts of how life is wonderful under ISIS; that you will be promised a husband and the chance to fulfil your religious obligation of making hijra. You may have even read stories of women describing how they are given free homes, maintenance, and a sisterhood made up of women from across the world and that ISIS provides security. But most of all you believe that the painful journey of leaving your parents and siblings is a pain worth sacrificing for the pleasure of God.
I have no other intention of writing this letter but to tell you that you are being lied to in the wickedest of ways. Just because your liars are cloaked in religious clothing, speak in a religious language, and claim to be speaking in God’s name does not change the simple fact that you are being lied to through a gross manipulation of the teachings of our faith. You are being lied to first and foremost about your religious duty as a Muslim but also about the reality of life under ISIS. And the thought of you destroying your life, for a pack of lies is what motivates me to write this letter. Because you deserve to know the truth and to live a fulfilled and happy life.
There is no religious obligation to make hijra or to pledge allegiance to this self-declared leader who claims to be Caliph. Muslims for centuries have lived in lands that were not under Muslim rule. Even during the Prophet’s lifetime, he did not ask those early Muslims who initially made hijra to Abyssinia to make hijra to Medina, when Medina was ruled by the Prophet (pbuh).
But this self-appointed caliph Baghdadi calls on you to make hijra you say? But I ask you, what kind of a caliph is this person who in direct contrast to the teachings of the Qur’an and our blessed Prophet Muhammad pbuh, justifies killing Muslims who declare the shahaadha including convert Abdul Rahman Kassig? How does he this so-called caliph justify killing innocent people? How does he justify the killing of Muslim leaders and scholars who only call for peace and love? The taking of even one innocent life is a great crime in Islam equated to killing the whole of humanity. Yet with so little regard, this same caliph justifies killing Muslims and non-Muslims alike including humanitarian workers like Alan Henning; a man who chose to give up celebrating Christmas with his family to instead help Syrian children.
Tell me what crime did thousands of young girls in Iraq and Syria commit to justify being sold into sexual slave markets and to be raped by ISIS fighters? I am not telling you a lie; ISIS’ own publications have openly stated this to be the case.
Tell me what reason is given for the destruction of centuries old churches and the killings of other minority groups like the Yazidis when God clearly states “For had it not been for Allah’s repelling some men by means of others, cloisters and churches and oratories and mosques, wherein the name of God is oft mentioned, would assuredly have been pulled down.” — Qur’an 22:40.
ISIS omits to tell you that for centuries Christians and other minority groups lived in the Middle East in harmony with their Muslim neighbours. Because it is rather inconvenient to their poisonous narrative of Islam. As Muslim jurist Khaled Abou el Fadl writes , the Qur’an teaches that the act of destroying or spreading ruin on this earth is one of the gravest sins possible. Fasad fi al-ard, which means to corrupt the earth by destroying the beauty of creation, is considered an ultimate act of blasphemy against God.
Those who corrupt the earth by destroying lives, property, and nature are designated as mufsidun (corruptors and evil-doers) who, in effect, wage war against God by dismantling the very fabric of existence, yet this is what ISIS have committed themselves to.
Islam does not seek to impose itself over other religions. The Qur’an states that God has made people different and diverse as a test so that we may come to “know one another, not despite each other”. Human diversity is, as Fadl writes, part of the divine plan, and the test is for human beings to co-exist and interact despite our differences.
ISIS state that girls should be married from the age of 9 and that women should remain “hidden and veiled from society” – but this stands in stark contrast to Muslim history. Islam produced some of the most amazing women who were anything but hidden away from society. Muslim women contributed to all walks of life including Fatima al Fihri who in 859CE founded the first academic degree granting university in Morocco. Asma Bint Shihab al-Sulayhiyya (d480/1087) who ruled Yemen with her husband as did her daughter in law, Arwa. Both these female heads of state were so respected that the Friday sermon in mosques were proclaimed in their names. Hidden, these women were not. The ISIL narrative of women flies in the face of Muslim history, the honour that Allah has conferred on women, and insults such great Muslim women who were pioneers in all walks of life.
ISIS claim to be calling for women’s liberation but do not be fooled – this is no liberation. This is subjugation and an abuse of women’s independence and authority that God has bestowed on women to be used serving humanity. Freedom is an essential core of Islam; ISIS only ever seem to deny it. Respect for life is a sacrosanct teaching of the Qur’an, yet ISIS only seem to cheapen it. Peace is what the Qur’an calls for again and again; yet ISIS only ever seek war and bloodshed. Some of the women who call you to ISIS are the same women who glorify the deaths of Muslims and non-Muslims and who call for the bloodshed of children in our country here in the UK.
What kind of Islam is this? When at its core Islam calls for the act of peace-making. Where is this peace in ISIS’s version of Islam? I see no peace, only death, destruction and misery. And this stands in stark contrast to centuries of Islamic tradition, a tradition based on mercy, compassion, pluralism, co-existence and human dignity.
You must know however, that once you go out there the chances of coming back are slim. Young women realising the error of their ways, have tried to escape but many have failed . The ability to fulfil any dreams you may have once had will be over as you discover how your identity, agency and freedoms are all denied and suppressed. ISIS’s treatment of women as second class citizens, is not the respect and dignity Islam promises women.
Finally, one can only end on the one person whom without you would not be alive today. Your mother. Your mother who for years raised and nurtured you, to enable you to achieve great things. Your mother who would lose sleep feeding you at night, who looked after you when you were ill and who would selflessly put you first, over and beyond her own needs. The same mother who would plait your hair for school every morning, ensured your uniform was ironed and your school bag was ready. And it is for this reason, mothers hold a special position in Islam. Your mother, your mother, your mother is what the Prophet Muhammad (saw) taught us. By asking you to leave your family behind, ISIS calls on you to turn your back on your mother.
Dear sister, do not destroy your life and your families lives by buying into a lie. You will find many of your fellow Muslim sisters have also rejected the call of ISIS as they have seen through the poisonous ideology it peddles.
